Timbales are drums that are tuned much higher than tom-toms and are a lot shallower. Metal and Maple woods are the common material the shells (the area in which the drums are hit with a stick or mallet), other woods can be used as well but are not as popular. Military bands, salsa music, and orchestras would be the most common places you would find timbales used.
