Well, you have lots of toys and equipment you could have, and a lot of it depends on the level you're doing it.
How "extreme" are the plays? What kind of dom is it? What kind of sub does she/he have?
In the playrooms I've been to... (I like it... middle-way?) it's normal to have some types of whips, like a flogger, a crop, maybe a cane... A long slave whip may be used too, of course this is all what people like, different people = different toys. Paddles are also quite normal.
