One type is from a bite of a flea that carries the disease. The spot where the person is bitten turns black and forms a pustule. The other type was carried by the air and came from a cough of an infected person ( like the flu). The people who got the plague this way died faster than the people with the bite.

The Plague affected everyone from kings to paupers, but the incidence of it was proportionately higher among the poor, as they lived closer together, under less acceptable sanitation conditions, and with a much higher likeklyhood of rats in their vicinity. You caught the black death when a plaged flea that had bitten a plaged rat reguritated the plague into your blood system before sucking your blood. Within four to five day a grown adult would be dead.

The black rats were very susceptible to a type of flea that carried the plague well and was attracted to biting human. The Asiatic brown rat housed a different type of flea that carried the plague poorly and didn't bite humans. The brown rat beat out the black rats and became the dominant rat in Europe.
