People in China live in houses or homes just like we do. Just because they are a developing country doesn't mean they live in different kind of houses.
But where you live in China affects what kind of housing you have greatly. If you live in the country than you will have a small house, but your yard will be big. If you live in city you are more likely to live in a tall skyscraper or in an apartment building because there is not as much space.
There are very few houses in Hong Kong. By far the majority of people live in high-rise apartment buildings that often reach 30 stories. Usually only the rich elite can afford individual houses in the urban area, while a small group of people live in old houses in the countryside.
Most people in China now live in apartments. With the mass migration of people to Tier 1 cities all of the new construction of living spaces has been apartments.

China is a normal country and people live in houses just like in other countries. Even in developed countries such as the USA or UK some people are homeless, its the same in every other country. More people in China may live in houses of a poorer quality than we are used to but they are still houses.
Some Chinese people live in the Emperor's palace, houses or apartments.
