The term "woodwind" comes from the original make of all woodwind instruments. They all traditionally require the use of one or more vibrating wooden reeds to make their sound. While the Flute is no longer a wooden instrument, it is still included amidst woodwinds as it has evolved from one. Other woodwinds are all still reed instruments; they require contact with a vibrating reed to make a sound. Examples of common woodwind instruments include the Clarinet, the oboe, the bassoon, the flute, and the Saxophone.

Woodwinds are, from the top down : Flute (actually metallic), Oboe, Clarinet, and bassoon, the last being the Bass instrument. all have reeds some have double. Saxophones are brass-wind instruments and are not used in symphony orchestras, nor are Guitars. for some obscure reasons (they thought the inventor was German!) Saxophones were banned in the Soviet Union for many years, and are one reason why the Russians were tardy in evolving their own brand of (Jazz). Adolph Sax, very German-sounding was a Belgian who spent most of his life in Paris, a stone saxophone marks his grave site in I believe, Pere Lachaise (Famous Paris cemetery, literally means, Father, The Chair! interesting title.
