They are are rather old-fashioned connector and originated in Europe as an audio standardization effort. They are just for inputs and outputs and if the device in your hands has RCA connectors you don't even need to worry about the DIN plug, because you'll use the RCAs. For a monitor? There are several. Most common is the VGA cable. DVI, or even HDMI are possible with better graphics cards. S-Video is an option as well.
PS/2 keyboard has what is called Mini-Din 6 pins and a mouse has DIN 5 pins.
