generally speaking if it has valves its a 4 stroke 4 cycle engine......if it doesnt have valves then it is a two stroke 2 cycle...................

The 3 cylinder model Mercury 90, uses a NGK BUHW-2, or Champion L78V. The 6 cylinder model, takes a NGK BUHW, or a Champion L76V.
Changing the plugs and the lower gear oil yearly is best. There are two flat head screw heads on the lower unit, an upper one for filling and a lower one for draining. Be sure to use marine grade lower unit oil not just regular gear oil.

it is on the rear of the engine below the engine. There is a rubber hose coming out of the motor and the drain plug is inside the rubber hose.
