OpenOffice software is what's called 'open source'. Although the original program is owned by the company (now called Apache) - the individual user is permitted to copy the software and give it to other people (so long as they're not selling it). The end user can also (if they're competent enough) make changes to the actual program, to suit their individual needs. These options are not available to Microsoft Office users - as their programs are all protected by strict copyright laws.
