There is no definitive answer to this question, especially considering that in some parts of the world (like Russia, for instance) the Eurasian continent is considered to be one, rather than two. The best explanation I can come up with is that the division of the Eurasian continent into two distinct continents is a result of eurocentrism, or the practice of viewing the world from a European perspective. Considering that Europeans did much of the early exploring and wrote many of the early geography books, their desire to be considered separate from (and superior to?) other parts, peoples, and cultures of the Eurasian continent led them to create an artificial division that would not have otherwise existed.
