Specifically, it's a Revenge Tragedy, a kind of play typified by Kyd's Spanish Tragedy in which one of the characters takes revenge for a wrong done to himself or his family, thus destroying the revengee, himself, and a lot of collaterals in the process. It's kind of like many action movies, except that the main character also dies and is therefore unable to appear in a sequel.
