Angela Merckel is the Chancellor of Germany. She is the leader of the Christian Democratic Party, a right-center party. She was born and raised in Leipzig, in the former East Germany. She is a physicist by trade. There are 2 primary democratic parties in the country: the Social Democratic Party & the Christian Democratic Party. The Greens usually join the SPD in a coalition government and the Free Democratic Party, has been known to join both parties over the years. The Christian Social Party is located in the state of Bavaria, and is the sister party of the CDU. Even though they have the word "Christian" in their name, the CDU is a secular party that has little clout with either the Lutheran or Roman Catholic churches. Germany is one of the most secular countries in Europe, with the vast majority of Germans, rarely attending church services any longer. The CDU is the major governing party in most of the states but over the last 2 years, the SPD has been reasserting itself! Today, the SPD's stronghold is Berlin, Hamburg and the Ruhr Industrial area. The CDU is the largest in the smaller cities and rural areas and in the former East Germany. Munich has always been a CDU stronghold. The President is more of a figurehead and ceremonially represents the country when heads of states visit or when he or she travels abroad. The Chancellor serves for 5 year terms. The CDU was the governing party after World War II and was in power till Willy Brandt of the SPD
were able to win in 1966.
