A nuclear chain reaction (APEX) ;)
Nuclear fission
The nuclear reaction used in the Bataan power plant is nuclear fission.
Fission refers to a nuclear reaction wherein a heavy nucleus splits spontaneously, with the release of energy. The ideal location of fission is in a power plant inside a nuclear reactor.
A nuclear power plant uses a slow, controlled nuclear chain reaction to heat water and generate electricity. A nuclear bomb uses a very rapid uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction in order to generate a massive explosion.
The uranium 235 atoms in the nuclear fuel are what actually fission, or split into two other atoms. The uranium is in ceramic fuel pellets that are inserted into fuel rods, that make up fuel elements, that are in the reactor core that is located in the reactor vessel of the nuclear power plant. After the fuel has been in the reactor it begins to produce plutonium 239 atoms within the fuel which will also undergo a fission reaction.

Nothing happens in the nuclear plant in Bataan. This plant was built but never operated.

The chain reaction can be controlled, and it can be stopped. It is controlled in a nuclear power plant, and it is stopped when the plant shuts down, as it does periodically for refueling.

Controlled! ...if the reactor is working properly.
photosynthesis
Heat from the nuclear reaction changes water to steam.
