Well, it came from the factory as an R-12 system. If you're not the original owner of the vehicle, I'd recommend you take it to a shop and have a refrigerant purity test done on it. Many R-12 systems were retrofitted to R-134a, and this cannot be determined by visual inspection, as the retrofitted systems retained the R-12 schrader valves.
In 87 it would be r-12, but to get it worked on it would have to be retrofitted to r-134.
