The sandwich was invented by the 4th Earl of Sandwich. One day he was playing cards, and he started getting very hungry, but he didn't want to stop playing. So he asked for a piece of meat between two slices of bread, so he could eat with his hands, while he played.

The sandwich was invented by the 4th Earl of Sandwich. One day he was playing cards, and he started getting very hungry, but he didn't want to stop playing. So he asked for a piece of meat between two slices of bread, so he could eat with his hands, while he played. At least, that is the story I've always heard.

John Montagu, the 4th earl of sandwich, an English diplomat, opened an inn in an area north of New York City. The inn was a place where travelers could rest and eat before continuing on their trip across the Hudson river and into the city. Often they would ask for food for their journey and the inn would supply meat, fish or cheese and place it on a round piece of bread, for teavel they would place another piece of bread on top.

The location of this inn still exist today, The name is the 'Duck ceder inn" Located in a town near the city of Suffern N.Y. About 30 miles North of Manhatten.
