It's called a 'driver'. A driver is a small piece of programming code that enables the software to talk to the hardware. At a higher level it is the Operating System that interacts with the Application Software first. The Op/System passes commands to the Driver.
Anytime you originally connect a printer, video card, or other component to your computer, you need to install the driver (usually on a CD) for the component first. So afterward, Windows recognizes the printer, it's configuration, and you can print using Ms Word.
Without the driver installed, the Operating System would be unable to communicate to the hardware installed.
