The surface of the umbilical cord is comprised of amniotic epithelium contiguous with the placenta and fetus. The connective tissue of the umbilical cord is of extraembryonic mesoderm origin, composed of Wharton's jelly (mucoid connective tissue) and sparsely distributed cells, including, stromal mesenchymal cells, contractile cells, macrophages, mast cells and myofibroblasts. It also contains a large quantity of water which aids in the prevention of umbilical blood vessel compression. There are umbilical arteries (2) and a vein inside the mucoid tissue.

Choose Umbilical Cord Blood Storage to Save Lives?

The blood contained in a baby’s umbilical cord can be useful in fighting life-threatening illness. Since the umbilical cord is usually discarded after a baby is born, parents are now choosing umbilical cord blood storage to preserve this valuable blood for future use.The blood in the umbilical cord contains healthy blood-forming cells. When this blood can be saved using umbilical cord blood storage, this healthy blood can be used later in patients with diseased blood-forming cells, who are fighting diseases like leukemia, lymphoma or inherited metabolic or immune system disorders. The blood saved using umbilical cord blood storage can be used for a cord blood transplant.A cord blood transplant has a better chance of being successful for a patient when the blood-forming cells come from a donor who closely matches the patient. The umbilical cord blood seems to be most useful patient who are struggling to find a matching marrow donor, patients who have an unusual tissue type, patients with a life-threatening genetic disorder, or patients who need to receive a transplant quickly. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services describes the options that expectant parents have for umbilical cord blood storage. The parents can choose to have the cord blood donated to a public umbilical cord blood storage bank. The blood stored in these public banks is made available to patients who are in need of a transplant. Not every hospital can collect the cord blood for umbilical cord blood storage in public banks.Another option for expectant parents is to store the cord blood in a family (or private) umbilical cord blood storage bank. These banks are available to any family willing to pay for them.A third option for expectant parents is to store the cord blood for a family member who has a specific medical need. The parents can have then the blood they saved in umbilical cord blood storage directly donated to the family member who needs it.The fourth option for expectant parents is to donate the cord blood to a laboratory or technology company that can use it for research. In these cases, there is no charge for collecting the cord blood.Any expectant parents who want to consider umbilical cord blood storage for any purpose should talk to their health care provider.

Storing Umbilical Cord Blood?

Anticipating the birth of a child is an exciting and joyful time. Expectant parents eagerly look forward to holding their new baby and begin making important decisions that will follow their child for a lifetime. One choice that many parents do not realize they can make is storing their baby’s umbilical cord blood. The collection and storage of umbilical cord blood gives parents the ability to provide potentially life-saving stem cells to their child, a family member or even a complete stranger. The stem cells in umbilical cord blood are unique and cannot be reproduced. Cord stem cells have the ability to grow into a multitude of cells including blood and immune system cells. Transplants of umbilical cord stem cells have many medical uses and can be used in the treatment or cure of many devastating diseases. Cord stem cells are also used in medical research. The collection of umbilical cord blood is not harmful or painful to the child or the mother. Blood is drawn from the umbilical cord after the baby is born. It is then sent to a storage facility and stored until it is used for medical purposes or research. There are two options in the storage of umbilical cord blood. Public banks accept donations of umbilical cord blood for use by the public. Once sent to a public bank, umbilical cord blood is listed anonymously by tissue type and is used for transplantation or research. Cord blood stored in a public bank cannot be guaranteed to be available if the donor or donor’s family develops a need for the stem cells later in life. There is not a charge to donate umbilical cord blood to a public bank. Umbilical cord blood stored in a family bank is linked to the donor. This blood can be retrieved by the donor or the donor’s family if needed. Parents maintain control or custody of the blood until the child reaches adulthood. Family banks generally cost from $1000 to $2000 in initial fees and then $125 annually thereafter. The collection and storage of umbilical cord blood must be arranged before delivery. Parents who wish to store cord blood usually begin making preparations before the third trimester. Mothers who are going to have cord blood collected should be sure their physician is aware and make it a part of her delivery plan.
