Caskets have been made from many different types of wood. Pine was used in the areas where the pine tree was the most abundant. Visit a funeral home and you will see caskets made from cherry, oak, walnut etc. Some caskets are made from sawdust composite woods and then veneered with another species of wood to make them more attractive and thus less costly.

Lower priced wooden coffins usually are made of softwood, higher priced ones of hardwood. The wood from conifers is called softwood, and the wood from broad leaved trees is named hardwood. These names are a bit misleading, as not all hardwoods are hard, and softwoods are not necessarily soft. Conifers are needle or cone bearing trees like pine, spruce, red cypress, cedar and redwood. Hardwood trees vary considerably in price. Typically, select woods like poplar or willow are least expensive, followed by elm, ash, hickory, pecan, chestnut, oak, birch, maple and cherry. The most expensive casket hardwoods are black walnut and tropical woods like teak and mahogany. Veneer covered caskets are generally less expensive than caskets made of solid wood. For low priced cloth covered wooden caskets also wood products like composition wood, particle boards or pressed wood are used. Of the 1.7 million caskets sold in the US in 2007, around 11% were cloth covered wooden caskets and around 18% hardwood caskets.

Most coffins are the same, although many are now made from cardboard. Most are cheap pulped wood with a veneer applied, usually with plastic handles.
