∙ 14y agoYou should never use any kind of wood chip as litter for rabbits. Use hay, straw, wood pulp, shredded newspapers, etc. Wood chips have strong odors that irritate rabbits and other small mammals.

∙ 11y agoYes, baby rabbits can chew on wood, but more importantly, they should have hay to chew on.
Hay is the best way to prevent dental problems, digestive problems, and mental health problems (like extreme boredom, anxiety). Baby rabbits can have alfalfa hay (aka lucerne hay; clover is also good). Once they're grown up, they should switch to grass hay (like timothy, orchard grass, brome, fescue, meadow grass). You should make the switch gradually, starting at about 7 months.
If you give your baby bunny or any bunny wood, make sure it's safe first!
- Avoid woods that have been treated with paint, oils, varnish, or any other kind of finish: only plain wood is good for bunnies!
- Make sure the wood is clean, and doesn't have any pesticides on it, or parasite eggs, or pollution (like car exhaust).
- Make sure it's not from a poisonous tree. For instance, don't give a bunny any wood from trees that bear stone fruits (like cherries, or peaches). Also don't give your bunny any wood that has phenols in it (like cedar, and fresh pine - some people say heat-treated pine is okay).
- Safe woods include: willow, spruce, ash, birch, maple, hawthorn, berry brambles, juniper, hazel, apple, poplar, pear.
