The American Pit Bull Terrier owes much of its ancestry to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and both breeds remain remarkably similar in appearance today. Bull baiting was a popular blood sport in England during the eighteenth century, where specially bred Bulldogs (the origins of the English/British Bulldog) were used to attack a tethered Bull for entertainment. However, support for the sport gradually dwindled as it was seen as more of a public nuisance. It was about this time that organised dog-on-dog fights took over. The Bulldog's used for bull baiting were crossed with feisty local Terriers in order to create a Dog that was strongly built, yet agile, and above all tenacious. These Dogs became known as the Bull-and-Terrier, and eventually (owing to the fact that they were fought in pits) the Pit Bull Terrier. These Dogs were almost identical to the present day Staffordshire Bull Terrier. As Dog fighting flourished, many of these Dogs were shipped overseas to America, where they were bred to be taller and leaner. Therefore two strains developed: the shorter, stockier type Dogs became known as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, whereas the taller Dogs became known as the American Pit Bull Terrier (or American Staffordshire Terrier).
