In Article II, Section 1, the Constitution defines the formal requirements for the office of President. There are no classes or schooling required to assume the office of President, providing a person meets all the constitutional requirements. However, the voters do expect the person seeking the office of President to have some political background. Many of our presidents have had political experience prior to becoming President of the United States. MrV

Unlike some professions like teaching or law, there are no courses you can take to become president. Many American presidents attended college, but some did not. One (Woodrow Wilson) had a PhD, while others had a Bachelor's or Masters, or in President Obama's case, a JD (Doctor of Laws). Some, like Abraham Lincoln, were largely self-taught, or learned by apprenticing themselves to a person in their chosen profession. President Obama studied Political Science while an undergraduate, because he had always been fascinated by politics. But presidential candidates have had a wide range of majors and interests, some of which relate to politics, but in other cases, their studies were about business, or law, or military history.
