Just understand: A SEM can see anything you can see on a light microscope (with much better resolution) however, it often needs to be conducting, so it is usually sputtered in gold (likely not in forensics).
The main benefit of an SEM are the different detectors. Contrast between secondary and backscatter can give a really nice contrast for peaks and valleys etc, and the EDX detector can actually tell you if you have and what percentage of metal you have
The four main types of microscopes are the Light Microscope, Electron Microscope, the Transition electron microscope and Scanning electron microscope.
Two types of electron microscopes are the scanning electron microscope, or SEM, and transmission electron microscope, or TEM.

1.Scanning electron microscope (SEM) 2.Transmission electron microscope (TEM)
There are many. Simple microscope, compound microscope, light microscope, scanning electron microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope, Dissection microscope, etc,but all together there are about 20 different types of microscopes.
