A mass of rocks and sediment is left as the glacier retreats, forming what is known as moraine.
We find that organic and/or inorganic sediments are laid down in water. These sediments are insoluble materials that are transported to the place where they are deposited in a process called (you guessed it) deposition. Materials dissolved in the water (soluble material, like salts and other minerals) may be laid down if the water is evaporated off over time.The sediments that are laid down in water are known as fluvial (deposited in rivers and streams) and lucustrine (lake) sediments.
The rock is called a glacial erratic when it is left behind by a glacier, and is of a completely different material composition than the rocks on which it was deposited.
Technically rocks are not sediments, rather sediments are derived from weathered rock material. These sediments may conslidate and form rocks such as sandstones and mudstones, which include shales and siltstones. This variety of rock types is of sedimentary origin. Each layer is deposited over time as the environment changes over millions of years. The process is deposition of differing sediments, forming strata.
