The US has issued 6 major varieties of silver quarters since the denomination was created in 1796:

  • Draped Bust design (1796-1807)
  • Capped Bust design (1815-1837)
  • Seated Liberty design (1838-1891)
  • "Barber" Liberty head design (1892-1916)
  • Standing Liberty design (1916-1930)
  • Washington Head design (1932-1964)

The Washington head quarter of course is still issued today, and the design used on the silver versions continued to be used on copper-nickel versions up till 1998.

To explain the name "Barber", it doesn't have anything to do with haircuts. The Liberty Head quarter was designed by a man named Charles Barber, so the coin quickly became known as a Barber quarter.
