Cell membranes are most permeable to non-polar molecules(eg. lipids and cholesterol). Polar molecules can also cross the membrane but require specific transporters, carriers,or channels(eg. sodium, potassium, chlorine, calcium, magnesium, glucose, amino acids, etc...).

Edit: Also Water, and Dissolved Gasses.

Glucose can pass through because it is small enough to fit through. Molecules like starch cannot, because it is too big.
