The first Confederate city captured by the Union Army was New Orleans in 1862. New Orleans was the largest port city in the Confederacy. By the end of the war, the Union had also captured Mobile, Savannah, Charleston, and Wilmington in order to deprive the Confederacy of supplies.

There were two cities that were captured by Union fleets which cut of supplies to the Confederacy. The first city was Mobile Alabama, and the second New Orleans Louisiana, this was known as the Union Blockade.

US Naval commander Samuel P. Lee was the first Union commander to demand the surrender of Vicksburg Mississippi. This demand was made on May 18, 1862. Lee was the captain of the USS Oneida. Just prior to this the City of New Orleans was captured and Baton Rouge also fell. The Union navy then set its sights on Vicksburg.
