General William Tescumseh Sherman
Sherman's objective in marching his troops from Atlanta to Savannah during the Civil War, known as his "March to the Sea," was to cripple the Confederacy's war effort by destroying its economic resources and infrastructure. By cutting a path of destruction through Georgia, he aimed to demoralize Southern civilians and soldiers alike, thereby hastening the end of the conflict. Additionally, this campaign sought to showcase the Union's military strength and resolve, demonstrating that no part of the South was safe from Union forces.

Yes. He was meant to be destroying only buildings of military importance, but it went a lot further than that, and thousands were made homeless. That is why so few fine old buildings are still standing in Atlanta.
The important events of the fall of Atlanta can be summarized as the following: * the capture of Atlanta gave Lincoln a much better chance of being reelected in the 1864 presidential race; * With Atlanta in the hands of General Sherman, he was able to cut various railway links to other parts of the South; * the city of Atlanta was deemed by its citizens as a "safe" place in terms of battles, its capture was a psychological blow to the South; and * with Atlanta in the hands of Union general Sherman, he was able to create a strategy for "marching to the sea" and capturing the seaport of Savannah Georgia.
He led the Union campaign to conquer Atlanta, from there destroying Georgia's countryside in a march to the sea.
