Typically, the most common way to measure mass (especially in physics) is the kilogram. One kilogram is equivalent to one thousand grams and is the preferred SI unit because it is more practical for measuring objects that are large in size.

Other units also exist for measuring mass:

For very small measurements, one might use grams, centigrams (.01 gram) or even milligrams (.001 gram). These units are usually used when measuring the mass of a solid substance or a liquid in small amounts (ie: 50 milligrams of sodium chloride).

For almost everything else in the metric world, there is the kilogram. The kilogram is used for measurement of anything as small as a book to as large as a star (or even a galaxy).

In other circumstances mass can be measured in other increments (that are NOT metric). One example of this is the 'slug.' One slug is about 14.59 kilograms and is just one of many non-metric mass units (this one in particular is more frequently used in Europe).
