In addition to giving you the qualifications to work in a crime lab, it should give you the science background to work in other science based jobs. Those jobs can include environmental testing, chemical/pharmaceutical/bio pharmaceutical manufacture and development, ecological survey, and food science to name a few. It would be good to take science classes to open you up to one of these backups as it is incredibly difficult and competitive to get a crime lab job. A minimum of a four year degree is required for the forensic jobs listed above, and because of the limited number of jobs and the surplus of qualified applicants for crime labs, I recommend a masters degree.

What is the scope of forensic science in India Is it good to do bsc from forensic science?

Forensic Science is still a fairly new field in India and the truth is that there is not much scope for it as of now. Its importance has yet to be acknowledged fully and its proper practice is still yet to be implemented by various investigating officers or law enforcement agencies during investigations. The courses offered by universities and the eligibility of Government posts also seem to clash; academic wise, while several universities in India currently offer a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, many of the forensic agencies do not consider such students to be eligible for such posts. So at the end of the day, an individual pursuing forensic science can either take up teaching or work in FSLs by preparing for competitive exams or work for private organisations. However, while there are forensic bodies such as the central and state forensic laboratories functioning, the recruitment are subjected to the availability or vacancies of the posts, which are rarely released. The pay scale of such posts are also low and should be taken into consideration.Forensic science currently does not have a well developed structure or foundation in the country. The academic curriculum well as the Government jobs and their eligibility requirements are still not properly defined and is yet to be a full fledged system. Therefore, at the moment, Forensic science as a career, does not have a good scope in India.
