The CSS Alabama was built for the Confederate States of America. It became a deadly menace for Union shipping during the US Civil War. The ship was assigned to seize or sink Union cargo vessels. and inflict damage to the Union's economy. Almost 70 Union cargo ships were sunk by this Confederate warship.
When Union Admiral Farragut was preparing to assault the port of Mobile, Alabama, he knew it would be dangerous. He faced a Rebel naval force and also Confederate mines and torpedoes. The USS Tecumseh was supposed to hug the shoreline, however it strayed away. The ship hit a torpedo and was sunk.

In 1864, the ship engaged in battle the USS Kearsage, and lost the battle, ending her terror on Union shipping.
