They serve as the basis of your qualifications - they're the minimum in qualifications that you'll require in order to pursue further education/employment post-16. They're valuable for future life as mentioned, for getting a job or further education. Without GCSEs which are your most basic qualifications, you can't really seek employment that's of any value so you'll end up being a binman or cleaner or something - no offence - but that's what'll happen.
