Evolution: genes are mixed and swapped and mutated during the production of gametes (egg and sperm) and these are passed on to offspring. The variations (mutations) can be good, neutral, or bad, and natural selection tends to cause those with good variations to be kept, and bad to be rejected.

Natural selection keeping good variations leads to adaption into an environmental niche which allows for better survival.
