it depends on what shark you are asking about, the hammer head shark has a long head because while it swims around on the sea floor it is using sensors so if there is a krill or such it can sense this like electric sonic kinda sound or something I'm not positive about what it is that makes the hammer head sense it i know it has something to do with electricity and when the HHS (hammer head) senses it he scoops at where the electric sonic sound thingy is at its stronger (the krill) it scoops at the sand and will most likely catch it but not the sand...im not sure how the HHS doesn't eat the sand but i hope the information i gave on this shark helped and sorry if i talked about the wrong shark
