It's best to plant irises in the spring, but they can be transplanted in the fall. The rhizome (brown part with roots on it) should not be completely covered or the irises will not bloom. They like plenty of sunshine and shouldn't be in a place that doesn't drain well or the rhizomes will rot.

You cannot grow Irises in an Aerogarden because they are bulbs or rhizome based, not seed.
Avoid plant food on the rhizome when you plant. Nitrogen can hurt the rhizome. The American iris society has an excellent web page to show you how to plant your irises. Make sure you have a sunny spot that is well drained.
I believe most iris like to be planted in full sun in most zones in the U.S. Exposing the rhizome may encourage the plant to flower.
