Words like scissors or pants are examples of words with a plural form but a singular meaning.
The verbs that go with them agree with their plural form, not with the meaning (which is singular):
These scissors need sharpening. (not "This scissors needs sharpening.")
These pants go well with my yellow blouse. (not "This pants goes well with my yellow blouse.")
But this is an aspect of English which is slowly changing. These days you will often hear 'This scissors needs sharpening' - and sometimes even see it written. A teacher will still mark it wrong though.
These nouns are always plural and they always take plural verbs: * glasses * pants/trousers * shorts * pajamas * jeans * people * police * scissors
A single verb is a verb that agrees with a single noun. Verbs need to agree with their nouns. Single-word verbs are verbs that are not compound verbs.
Obviously, the word "SCISSORS" is NOT a verb. It is a noun. Verbs are what we call action words. Nouns, on the other hand, are names of people, places, dates, things, etc.
They have to agree since the verb is the action wich the noun takes withing the sentence.
Subjects and verbs agree in person and number (I am, the tree is, they are). Some adjectives (determiners) agree with nouns in number (this man, these men). In Spanish, adjectives also agree in gender with nouns (casa blanca, zapato blanco).
A) Verbs can be multiple words C) Proper nouns need to be capitalized D) Coordinating conjunctions join similar grammatical elements like verbs with verbs or nouns with nouns
