2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV)

In modern usage, "creature" is generally thought of as being synonymous with "animal." But the Greek word ktisis, which the King James translates as "creature," literally means "a created thing." The New King James and NIV translations of the verse above render it, "a new creation."

The story of Adam and Eve is not a fable, but a true happening. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden they died spiritually as well as having physical death come up on them in later years.

This sin in the garden has passed from Adam on down to everyone born since that time. Every person born is now born spiritually dead and at enmity with God. But God foresaw this happening and in His grand plan has provided a Savior, Jesus Christ, His Son to come to earth and die on that cross to remove sin from every person who believes in Him.

When a person believes in Jesus Christ as Savior they are born again (see John 3:1-8 & verse 16 also). When a person is born again they are born again with a living spirit and are not spiritually dead anymore but alive to God. They have become a NEW CREATION (II Corinthians 5:17).

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV): Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Paul is saying that by becoming Christians, the Corinthians were metaphorically new persons.
