Most often acute bronchitis is caused by a virus. So, antibiotics will not help, and, since we have a problem in the US with resistant bacteria from overuse of antibiotics already, unless your doctor recommends them (because he has diagnosed the problem to be bronchitis caused by bacterial infection), you should not ask or push the doctor to give them to you, it is just a waste of money and can worsen the problem of resistant bacteria. Although they shouldn't, sometimes doctors prescribe antibiotics merely to appease the patient's persistent request for them.

Other things you can do to help bronchitis symptoms depend on the cause. Acute bronchitis can be caused, as mentioned above, by viral or bacterial infections, fungal infections (rarely), and acute irritation such as severe allergic responses or smoke inhalation from a fire.

Chronic (recurring) bronchitis is usually caused by Allergies, irritation from cigarette smoking, or from occupational exposure to irritants such as various dusts, fibers, coal dust, or asbestos. It is also common in patients with other lung conditions such as Asthma, obstructive pulmonary disease, or cystic fibrosis where there are inflamed or constricted bronchial tubes which don't allow proper aeration or movement of thick secretions.

All cigarette smoking should be stopped as well as any exposure to other irritants, and an over-the-counter cough medicine, especially one containing guaifenesin to help loosen and move secretions (such as Robitussin), may be all that is required. If the exposure is to second-hand cigarette smoke, the bronchitis will typically subside fairly quickly once the irritant is removed.

To reduce inflammation and help with aches or pains associated with any form of bronchitis, Tylenol or other over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents (e.g., Advil, Aspirin) can be very effective.

Fluid intake for proper hydration is important, especially if there is a fever associated with the bronchitis, to give the body moisture for the lung and bronchial tissue and to help loosen thick secretions, . Humidifying the air with a vaporizer or spending time in the humid air after a shower or bath can similarly aid in the loosening and removal of thick secretions.

Medical Professionals may add other medications besides antibiotics when indicated, such as bronchodilators to open (dilate) the airways and prescription-strength cough suppressants. Report the onset of fever, changes in amount or color of secretions, chest pain or other symptoms to them during the course of treatment, because, even if the cause initially was an irritant or allergy, secondary bacterial infections are not uncommon.

Fungal infections need special medications and treatments by a medical professional, usually a specialist.
