Abraham Lincoln served in the Illinois militia during the "Black Hawk" war between April 21, 1832--July 10, 1832. He did not see any combat though he help bury the dead militiamen in two of the battles. During his time in the militia, he was elected captain and ended his service as a private. After the service he joined Captain Jacob Early who headed an independent spy company. He was able to forge long time political friends while in the spy company.
