His step-mother taught him to read and he had some sparse schooling, attending a month of school here, a few weeks there. Collectively he had about a year of schooling. He educated himself by borrowing books from neighbors. By the time he was an adult he had full passages of Shakespeare memorized, and he learned enough about the law to pass the bar exam by reading law books.
