It had some chain stores like an A & P and a W T Grant's, but also 3 downtown movie theaters, Hack's Hobbies, a pawn shop, The Middleton Tavern, The Leader, Peerless Clothing, and Sadler's Hardware. There were few restaurants, some bars and seedy sandwich places, and only a few hotels: The Maryland Inn, a Holiday Inn on Riva Road, and a Howard Johnson near the Bridge. West Street was dumpy and unsafe. The Public Library was located on Church Circle, where the Raleigh Tavern now stands. Trumpy's Boatyard was a large marina and boat-building facility in Eastport. The Eastport drawbridge was activated by a human being. The first Bay Bridge was built in the 50s. Before its construction, people and boats were ferried to the Eastern Shore.
