Ares is generally considered to be the Greek God of War; his Roman counterpart was Mars, though Mars was apparently nicer than Ares, who the Greeks related to bloodthirsty violence and murder, rather than more gentlemanly battle pursuits.

In Greek myth, Ares was a son of Hera, sometimes said to be by her husband Zeus, sometimes said to have been born by other means.

While Mars was a highly important and respected god in Roman myths, Ares wasn't much liked, nor talked about, by the Greeks.

One thing the two gods have in common is the legend that they were both lovers of the goddes of love, Aphrodite in Greece, and Venus in Rome.
