There are around 10 places in England named Bradford, but I guess you mean Bradford in Yorkshire.

At the time of Domesday Book in 1086 "Bradeford" was a medium sized village with around 300 people and only a small amount of land under the plough. The population increased (along with an increase in dwellings) when a market was granted by Henry III in April 1251 - this led to the granting of "borough" status in 1311, when it was considered a small town.

Leather tanning and wool cloth production were important industries, the first relying on large amounts of ox, cow, calf and deer hides, the second relying on huge numbers of sheep.

These activities would have resulted in guilds being formed to protect the interests of the tanners and wool-merchants.
