Buchenwald was a very harsh, 'ordinary' concentration camp, not an extermination camp. About 25% of the prisoners perished. Most of these were worked to death on insufficient food. Many also died when some of the prisoners were taken on death marches in April 1945. From about late 1944 onwards some prisoners from camps further east were moved to Buchenwald.
The primary killing method at Auschwitz was the use of gas chambers, where victims were exposed to poisonous gas, primarily Zyklon B, under the guise of shower facilities. This method was part of the broader systematic extermination of Jews and other targeted groups during the Holocaust. In addition to gas chambers, mass shootings and forced labor also contributed to the high death toll at the camp.
