A man who has what we call today a mid-life crisis. When he was younger he had dreams of being a knight and fighting things like giants and being a hero. In the story, he embarks on a journey to do just that, imagining simple things like windmills to be giants he's fighting. Everyone thinks he's crazy--and, in a way he is, but that's the reader's opinion--and in the end--SPOILER--he loses the will to live from all the mockery and people crushing his dreams.
