Drancy, near Paris, was initially set up in 1941 as an internment camp for Jews, Roma (gypsies) and homosexuals when northern France was under German occupation. Originally run by the French authorities, control was handed over to the Germans in July 1943. Drancy was the key transit camp. The inmates were transported by rail to Auschwitz.
