Edgar Allan Poe's major vice was alcohol abuse. He struggled with Alcoholism for much of his life, which contributed to his erratic behavior and ultimately may have played a role in his untimely death at a young age.

Excessive drinking of alcohol. Poe would fall into depression and turn to excessive drinking. There is no proof that he was an alcoholic, but he definitely drank too much. His drinking was so excessive he developed a reputation as a drunk. In addition, it could have led to his death. On October 3, 1849 he was found semi-conscious outside a saloon on a sidewalk in Baltimore and died on October 7, 1849.
