Edward was dying of the Spanish Influenza when Carlisle found him.
Edward was dying of Spanish Influenza in 1918 in a hospital where Carlisle was working at the time. Edward's mother begged Carlisle to help her son and in the end Carlisle ended up changing him into a vamprie and became Edward's adoptive father.
Edward was 17 when he became a Vampire. He was born on 1901, so to add it up Carlisle turned Edward into a vampire on the year of 1918.

(Edward was) Edward as well as both his parents was dying of the Spanish influenza. Edward's mom told Carlisle to save Edward in a way that only Carlisle could. An hour later Edward's mom died. Carlisle first took Edward's mom and dad to the morgue then stole Edward. He acted on a whim and turned Edward into a vampire.
