Because it is one of the fundamental languages of computer programming. It teaches us how we think, but in a computer.

Fortran IV was a version of the Fortran programming language developed in the 1960's. It was widely accepted as a standard version of Fortran until the development of Fortran 66 which was itself largely based on Fortran iV.
Fortran was designed by, and for, people who wanted raw number-crunching speed. There's a great deal of legacy code written in Fortran, and the embarrassing (to snobs who prefer object-oriented languages) secret is that attempts to rewrite that code in a more "stylish" language result in programs that just don't run as fast.
BASIC and FORTRAN are computer programming languages.

Usually thought to mean "Formula Translation", FORTRAN is a blend word name for a software language and compiler whose original full name was "The IBM Mathematical Formula Translating System". The first FORTRAN compiler was released in April of 1957. In 1991, however, the connection to the original meaning was dropped. So from the Fortran 90 of then to the upcoming Fortran 2008, the name is spelled with only the first letter capitalized.

Mainly because there is no stack in Fortran 77.
FORTRAN is an abbreviation for FORmula TRANslation. It is a computer programming language.
The first high-level language to be designed was Plankalkül between 1943 and 1945. However, it was never implemented. The first implementation to be widely-used was Fortran in 1956.
The latest stable version of Fortran is Fortran 2008 (ISO/IEC 1539-1:2010). There are various implementations available, including open source. GFortran (part of GCC) is primarily based upon the much older Fortran 95 specification but includes most features of Fortran 2003 as well as partial support for Fortran 2008.
Yes. The FORTRAN write command output's data to a file.
FORTRAN is a third generation language.Note: I don't know what these generations are, but I'm quite sure that Fortran is one of the oldest high-level programming languages, as are Cobol and Algol.
