FORTRAN is a third generation language.
Note: I don't know what these generations are, but I'm quite sure that Fortran is one of the oldest high-level programming languages, as are Cobol and Algol.

Assembly language is a low level language where each statement (mostly) corresponds with one machine instruction. Higher level languages, such as C and FORTRAN, generate multiple machine instructions for each statement.
There are hudreds of Programming languages out there.Examples: C++, GWbasic, C#, C++, HTML , Ruby etc. They're further categorized as "Low Level language" and "High Level Language".Low level languages are those languages which are closer to the binary language or in another words machine language. These are difficult for us to learn but it's easy for machine to execute quickly.Example of a low level language is assembly language.High level languages are those languages which are close to human language/natural language and are easy for us to learn.Examples of high level language are Python, Ruby, C++ , Java etc.
BASIC , FORTRAN ,COBOL , PASCAL are high level lanhuages which are simply understood by us used in the computers.
Fortran IV was a version of the Fortran programming language developed in the 1960's. It was widely accepted as a standard version of Fortran until the development of Fortran 66 which was itself largely based on Fortran iV.

The oldest computer language still in use is Fortran, invented in 1957. The first computer language was assembly language, but the first high level programming language was Plankalkul.

FORTRAN was the first high level programing language. developed in 1954.
Formula Translation/Translator (high-level programming language)
which? what type? FORTRAN on the IBM 704 was the first high level language in 1954.
The first high-level programming language was called FORTRAN, which stands for "Formula Translation." It was created in 1957 by John Backus (IBM) to help scientists and engineers write programs more easily.

FORTRAN is an abbreviation for FORmula TRANslation. It is a computer programming language.
Fortran and Cobol are two old and successful languages.
