He believed that he could win only by waging total war - destroying all food, homes, farms, buildings etc .. Basically any supplies that the Confederate could use

∙ 8y agoDespite the huge amount of Union casualties it caused, General Grant and US President Lincoln sought an end to the US Civil War. Grant therefore used the "numbers game". He realized that the South could not replace its soldiers as the North could. Many Northerners criticized Grants scorch and burn and win at any cost strategy.
