He was appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac only a few days before the battle, replacing Joe Hooker, who had lost to Lee at Chancellorsville. Later, when Grant became General-in-Chief, he travelled with Meade's army, and the popular accounts of Lee's final surrender at Appomattox always seem to feature Grant but never Meade, even though Meade commanded the army to which Lee surrendered.
In general terms, General George B. McClellan served only four months as general in chief. During his tenure there were several major developments. The Peninsula campaign was tried and failed, which led to the Second Battle of Bull Run. This in turn was followed by the South's march into Maryland and into the Battle of Antietam. This was yet another significant military operation. McClellan was relieved of duty some seven weeks after that horrific battle.

Ulysses Grant, who liberated the Mississippi, went to help George Thomas at Chattanooga, and would be promoted General-in-Chief, early in 1864.
